Court cannot call President: Fauzia Wahab

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Central Information Secretary Fauzia Wahab said that there was no constitution in the era ruled by Hazrat Omar (R.A), as there was only Holy Quran.

Talking to a private TV channel in a program convened on the immunity enjoyed by President Asif Ali Zardari, she added that the then court subpoenaed Hazrat Omar for having no constitution; but, today’s judiciary could not call President Asif Ali Zardari thanks to the presence of the Constitution now.

She said that President Asif Zardari had the immunity in accordance with the International Convention and no case could be reopened against him.

The Central Information Secretary said that the ministers of PPP in the meeting showed their solidarity with President Asif Ali Zardari.

The other participants including Ansar Abbasi and Ahsan Iqbal lambasted the statement by Wahab and held it in conflict with the Islamic teaching.

Ansar Abbasi said the PPP leader hurt the sentiments of the Muslim, adding the Supreme Court (SC) annulled the immunity wielded by Former President Gen (rtd) Pervez Musharraf under Article-248 of the Constitution in its verdict regarding the reinstatement of Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry on July 20, 2007 and in a detailed verdict in December 2009.

During hearing of this case, former president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Aitezaz Ahsan said if Hazrat Omar could be called and Hamid Khan reinforced by saying he could appear 11 times before court, how come Musharraf could have this indemnity.

Responding this point, Fauzia said, ‘There was no Constitution in his (Omar’s) time. Only, there was the Holy Quran,’ addressing the participants to accordingly refrain from citing his (Omar’s) incident as an example in this era.

Wahab added, ‘President Zardari is not an ordinary citizen, as immunities are given to him. If he is not accorded the immunities, he cannot function.’

Ahsan Iqbal said Hazrat Omar made appearance before court, the very fact told that there was Islamic jurisprudence then, as it existed in every era, adding that even today, Britain has no written constitution; they have a Jurisprudence and conduct themselves in accordance with it.

Amin Fahim hopes judiciary will do justice

LAHORE: Senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Federal Minister for Trade, Makhdoom Amin Fahim said the President had immunity under the Constitution, hoping that the judiciary will justly dispense of the matter.

Talking to media at Lahore airport, he said the party has decided that some ministers would appear before the Supreme Court (SC); therefore, their visits abroad were cancelled.

Amin Fahim said Pakistan was being run under the Constitution and the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had already said there was no conflict between judiciary and the Parliament.

The federal minister said the 37 killings in Karachi was a provincial subject; however, it was incumbent upon both the Law and the government to plunge into motion on the issue.

The coalition with Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) is a political decision and it will continue, he added.

PCB chief dismisses allegations of match-fixing

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt on Sunday dismissed allegations of match-fixing against the national team players.

Ijaz Butt added that if any of his subordinates raises the issue of match-fixing, “he is talking nonsense.”

In a leaked video recording of an inquiry committee hearing, Pakistan team coaches Intikhab Alam and Aaqib Javed raised suspicions about the performance of wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal during the winless tour of Australia earlier this year.

Intikhab Alam said that he was flabbergasted when Kamran Akmal missed a run out of Shane Watson in the Sydney test and later came across suggestions of match-fixing.

However, Butt said the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit has instigated strict security measures for all international matches.

“Nobody is allowed to enter into players’ dressing room, only the manager carries a mobile phone with him during international matches and there are several other security measures which they take,” Butt said.

“It’s (match-fixing) all media hype and nothing else.”

Butt said former captain Younis Khan’s career was ruined by false match-fixing allegations when a parliamentarian accused Pakistan of throwing the semifinal of the Champions Trophy in South Africa last year.

The PCB fined and suspended seven cricketers _ including Younis on an inquiry committee recommendation for a lack of discipline and poor performance during the tour of Australia.

Butt said he approved all the fines and suspensions. Six players have since appealed against suspensions and fines.

The PCB chief said that arbitrator Irfan Qadir will submit his report to the cricket board’s governing board, which will take the final decision.

“Let the appeals be completed and I will not comment until we get the final report from the arbitrator,” Butt said.

Affectees end protest near Lake

HUNZA: The landslide-spawned Lake in Ata Abad area of Hunza is persistently rising, leaving the gap between the Lake and the spillway very little, Geo News reported Saturday.

Meantime, protest by the afectees against no announcement of relief package by the government has ended after Deputy Commissioner Hunza Zafar Waqar Taj assured them of release of funds within seven days.

The government was taking all necessary measures to help the victims.

The affected people here have turned all in protest against no announcement by the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for immediate relief package and staged a sit-in near the Lake, exposing their lives to an imminent danger of massive disaster.

The government’s tall and inflated claims regarding the provision of electricity, water and other amenities to the camps erected for the affectees from the low-lying areas situated between Hunza Nagar and Gilgit, turned out to be nothing.

The people complained about the non-availability of the facilities at the camps.

Over 250 people mainly children and women from a camp here arrived near the lake and staged a sit-in against the government.

The protesters said the PM Gilani did not announce any relief package for them in his visit here.

According to demonstrators, it is better for them to die in the Lake as it bursts than languish and expire at the camp, adding they would not budge from their current spot until and unless their demands were met.

The protesters raised slogans against the government and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

According to Geo News, if the protesters persisted where they were at that time, it could lead to catastrophic situation, as the gap between the spillway and the Lake whittled down to only eight feet.

Also, the continuous landsliding could harm them.

The protesters, with tears in their eyes, told that the government did nothing for their relief, as their relatives including their brothers and fathers are present on the other bank of the Lake in extreme precarious condition.
